check engine light still on. Can this be reset by owner or is there a trip to the dealer required?

Had the same thing happen the other day. Trip to dealer indicated sporadic misfire. If you have capabilities to reset yourself, you are probably okay to do so.

I've noticed that these cars don't like to be started and stopped without running...
I backed my car out of the garage this weekend to wash it. 15 minutes later I started it again and rolled back into the garage. When I got out I noticed a rich fuel smell from the exhaust. I'm pretty sure there was just some fuel pooled up and caused the engine to misfire today.
Leaving my car at the dealer for a day and paying $50 to reset the light is going to frost my *****. Consumer Reports say Audi's have a reliablility problem. I'm starting to agree.

take it from someone with experience
My '98 2.8 has had CEL come on about 8-10 times since I purchased it. A few times, just as you indicated, a short trip like backing it out of the garage and shutting it off caused 'fuel mixture richness' according to my dealer - and slightly fouled my plugs, etc.
Also, I have learned that the CEL has 2 stages: Steady-On means a fault occurred have it looked at. Flashing means (if not already in limp-home mode) have it flatbedded to dealer.
More than anything else, the CEL problems plague these cars. I love the car, and it isnt enough to make me see it (or my 2002), it just is a source of annoyance in a rather expensive package.
I've also had the dealer tell me (on seperate visits) that my CEL was caused by:
-Faulty Oxygen Sensor
-Vacuum Check fault (gas cap loose)
-Low voltage (battery insufficiently charged)
-Coolant Sensor bad (replaced)
Good luck dude
