Default Any major differences between these ecu's... 8D0 907 557 vs 8D0 907 559

I know 557 us the manual and 559 is the tiptronic

if reprogramming the tip to a manual does that make the ecu box number a 557?

Default Its VIN and engine code depedant, not tranny

Tranny is a soft coding, so you can change that with VAG-COM.

I went from a stock 557 N box to an APR 557 P box without a problem. The tranny in the other car was a 5spd, mine is auto. 2 mintues with VAG fixed that.

Default the "7" and the "9" duuuuuuhhhh

like nate said, its 2 min witht he vag com to chnage the soft code from tip to 5spd. both ecu's should be from a 97-99.5 1.8t.

Default Well, there's a small catch to a '97 N box working even in a 98.5

For some reason a stock box, even with proper codings, will not run properly in the car. I don't know why, don't really care why at this point, and I'm sure the answer is in the archives.

However, once chipped your date range is correct.

Default thats odd.

i wonder why the stock box wouldnt work but a chipped will. i had never heard of that. i thought all the 557-559 box were all interchangable, chipped or not.

Default I speak from first hand experiance

Tried selling my 557 N stock box to a fellow AWer, got it, plugged it in, and car ran for crap. Had him check for fault codes, proper coding, etc. Had him go the full nine yards running several TBAs, logging blocks, etc. He took it to his indy mechanic who couldn't get it running properly either, so I refunded his money. He had a 98.5 turbo 5spd by the way.

I may be way wrong here, but I think aftermarket ECU programs use an unified code that isn't box-dependant unlike the stock code. Then again, I could be WAY off.

I never got a chance to prove what he said though. I still question the problems he had.
