How do I locate a bad ABS Sensor?
My brake light and ABS light are on constantly (not flashing). Before they came on and stayed on, the ABS would kick in whenever I was driving under 5mph. So, I removed all of the sensors and cleaned them with brake cleaner. The problem went away for about 1 mile, then the lights turned on again. I'm asuming that means i have a bad ABS sensor. Is there any way to check each sensor to find out which one is bad? I don't want to have to replace all of them at ~$150 a piece. I don't have a VAG scanner, but I don't think that would help because my car is a 97 and it won't tell me which individual sensor is bad anyway. The car is a 97 1.8T quattro with 60k miles.

I just got done putting all the pieces back together from a recent control arm, wheel bearing, and shock install. When I pulled the ABS sensors I wiped them with a bit of brake cleaner on a rag. And now guess what, I got the same two lights. They seem to come on after about 30 seconds of driving--before ever touching the brakes.
I'm going to have a look with the VAG-COM soon and see if I can tell anything. I'm afraid I should've just left them "dirty." :-| If it ain't broke....
