Which intake system?
Has anyone replaced their airbox with a filter? Or just put some tpye on intake on? I was looking at the one from tap1- It's the one called Cone DTM filter for $125.00

Not a good idea on a 1.8.......
The cone is positioned too close to the turbo. It ends up sucking in lots of hot air. Not good.
Many have claimed no noticable power gains, and some have even claimed a decrease in power.
The TAP kits especially suck. No heat shield. Don't do it.
Keep the stock airbox setup.

Heres My HKS.
<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/8257/dscf0275.jpg"></center><p>Yes I noticed it sucked lots of hot air in so..
It came with a heat sheild similar to the lltek one. I also connected the OEM heat shield on it AND also made my own heat sheild.
THen I relocated the snorkel so its pointing Right on top of the filter.
And I also have another custom snorkel..
I am very happy with this setup. After driving I touch the metal mesh on the HKS filter and its cold!

For a 1.8? Not really. All of them have the same hot air issues....
I think some people have done some fairly drastic modifications in order to get more fresh air to the cone, but I think these modifications simply reduce the negative effects of the cone. Not sure if it actually results in an improvement over the stock airbox.

When you say "after driving", do you mean highway or city?.....
Even the stock airbox filter gets quite warm after city driving.
And even an uninsulated cone will stay cool on the highway.
The real question is how hot does it get in stop-and-go city driving? I think "warm" is inevitable. But "hot" is not good. Does it really stay cool after a half an hour in stop and go traffic? I would find that hard to believe, even with the insulation. =)

Well On highway its cold. City driving it gets a bit warm. But definatly not hot. Before when i...
Didnt have the insulation the mesh on the HKS almost burnt my finger when I touched it!
Now its Much better.
And the sound is amazing.. Sssswwwsssss.... PSSSHHHH

That's what I thought. Sounds like you improved it......
I think you're in agreement with me when I say that without some serious insulating, the intake kits are a bad idea on 1.8's.
By the way, do you notice a performance improvement?

My experiences with both set ups... (its long)
I had used panel filters like ITG and BMC, much better response over stock. The stock box and intake snorkel can get very hot during stop and go traffic. I had tried lining heat shield on side of airbox with thermotec heat shielding, much better heat block where the box used to feel hot like an iron is now warm. Now I am experimenting with a custom intake using a K&N Exteme series cone filter, the benefits are: great transient response when you get on it (great torque) and racing (dust the car next to you, Auto-X or racetrack use) but horrible when its stop and go (rush hour traffic) and intake noise. Problems arise from the heat from across the way (one hot turbo) where the temps can rise to the point of pinging may result. An effective heat shield is necessary to block off the heat as much as possible. Also, the air intake noise upon acceleration is one that I can live without on a luxury sports sedan. It generates a giantic suction noise that can be heard from 15 feet away claims from my friends. I am working on acoustic foam treatment lining to lower the decibels and let everyone know when its done. If anyone is interested in the panel filters I mentioned, I am selling them for $25.00 each to the above e-mail address.
