Just curious: The 2.8 is heavier than the 1.8T, so shouldn't the brakes be stronger/beefier?

Newp, but it's not so much the inital stop but fade resistance.
The BMW Rotors are WAY bigger (to the tune of like 2"+ in the rear!) and thus dissipate heat a lot better, resulting in better performance linearity.
Case in point - try taking an A4 to the track with stock brakes. Ugggggggggh. 3 series Bimmers can get away with it for a bit.

eh....do you mean E46 or E36....there are 2 E36 3 series' in my family
and stock for stock, the A4 brakes better than both...easily. The pedal feel on the BMW is mushy compared to the A4, and the E36 brakes are slower to stop.
Now maybe they updated it on the E46, that I don't know, but the E36 brakes are no better than the A4's.
