Default need some input.

Hi everyone,
so here's the scenario, 2000 2.8 a4 quattro, 5 speed. car starts up well and idles fine. When the clutch is pressed down and you try to put the car in gear its like you shift off to lala land and have no idea what gear the car is in. a little while back i shifted from 1st to 2nd and after the shift the stick went back oddly far. Right now the car isnt engaging in any gears so its sitting. if anyone has any input it would be greatly appreciated!
im trying to figure out a game plan and my home shop is 2 hours away. Thanks,
Larry

Are you trying to say that when you put it into gear with the motor running and release the clutch the car just doesn't move?

it will go into a gear but sometimes its 3rd when its supposed to be first, or 4th when its supposed to be 2nd.. so it goes but but its acting crazy. when it actually goes into first it takes off fine.

If there was no recent work done on the gearbox or clutch, the shift linkage will need to be inspected for correct operation.

Have you installed a 'short-shifter' in place of the factory shifter? If so, it is possible the linkage will need to be adjusted to allow the correct gear to be selected. There is also the possibility there is internal damage to one of the selector forks.

nothing recent done with the clutch or gearbox. no short shifter. it started with a hard pull to second and the stick went way too far back almost like something broke. i stopped and put it back into nuetral and then with a small amount of effort back to first and it was fine for awhile. then this all started up. this is the first time ive messed with this type of thing so im guessing the shift linkage is accessable right under the stick or is it somewhere under the car? and thanks for the reply

Just sounds like something in the shifter box or on the shift linkage to the transmission changed. I actually had this happen to me many years ago, basically changing the location of each gear slightly different and even changing the angle of the path from gear to gear.

If you have the Bentley shop manual (www.bentleypublishers.com), group 34 under the year, engine and gearbox choices has the complete procedure for inspecting and adjusting the shift linkage components. Some may be accessed from inside the vehicle after removing the shifter boot; others can only be accessed from under the vehicle on the RH side of the gearbox. On some vehicles it is necessary to remove the RH exhaust pipe to gain access to the linkage.
