Default Please help!! Did DIY Timing Belt Change on Monday...

...on my B5 1.8tq using the AW tech article. Everything went according to instruction, both upper and lower timing marks lined up exactly when cranking after replacing the new belt, and car started right up with no warnings and was back on the road running sweeter than ever later that evening and through the week until today...i was on my into SF and the car started hesitating, then sputtering....i managed to get into work ok, but i just ran it for a few mins in its parking spot and at first it warmed up with no probs. i turned the car off, started it again, and within a minute or two it started sputtering again til it stalled out. Now when I run the car, I'm hearing what sound like bent valve lifters clicking :**( What on earth could have done this after a week of successful driving?? I checked quickly under the upper timing belt cover and the belt is still intact and doesn't appear to have slipped off but any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks

...just a thought....i put gas in my car this morning before my commute and perhaps i put regular or plus in my tank instead of premium?? i've had this car chipped and been driving it for almost 4 years now so i've never done that before, but if i was a complete spaz and somehow did regular or plus in my tank, would this also cause similar symptoms?? and god help me if i did actually do that how would one r&r?

Recheck your work on the timing belt before you touch the key again.

Possible the cam chain tensioner took a dump and its just a coincidence. The rattling noise does sound like that. Is it towards the rear of the head?

PHEW!! So Audi0s, think you were right on the money, man! My buddy who works at Audi just came by with one of the company readers and pulled codes-said timing belt looked good, and turned out to be a misfire in the #2 cylinder-seemingly as a result of the cam adjuster that may have coincidentally gone out, heh. Good news is, I was already planning to do the valve cover gasket and cam tensioner seal this weekend, so just looks like I'll be replacing the cam adjuster as well...all i'm sayin is yay for not having ****ed up the timing belt!! yaaaay. thanks for the help, guys-audiworld for life!

Hahaha yyeeessss!!!! Official Audiworld Master Tech!!!! Not a terrible job, the part is kinda expensive though, and you dont need to remove both cams. You can loosen up the intake cam and "roll it out" but leave the chain on the exhaust, and slip the new tensioner in. Count the links between cam marks, I think its 16, but it doesnt line up exactly, you need to go back half a tooth to get the right number. Take a close up pic of both cams before you remove them so you have some sort of reference. Keep the tool the tensioner comes with for future jobs.
