Pulling out of the 1.8T contest,... *sigh* =(
Hey everyone,
This is a huge let-down with all that home stretch effort. All the mechanical work was completed, BUT the custom AEM ems programming gave us serious issues.
The synchronization between the car and the EMS isn't close to perfect. There is no plug and play kit for the Audi A4. (Really, who puts a stand alone ems in an A4???) For example, the coil in cylinder #1 works intermittently, the radiator fan works when it feels like it, etc. But it could be so many variables - pins placement setup, connector issues, etc. Obviously, we didn't even get to the nitrous since we can't get everything else working adequately and consistently.
I did not want the car showing up at the contest partially ready and unreliable. It would not be representative of me and my mechanic's efforts. I could not justify paying $3000 USD to ship the car when I have to find a balance between competitiveness & reliability. It's not the way it should be.
I have just e-mailed my contact at European Car notifying him of my withdrawl from the challenge. But,... "I'll be back." Until then, more tuning and some 1/4 mile times & dyno charts would have to suffice!
A sleep deprived, frustrated 1.8T owner,
Steve
PS - I hope they still let me attend the event! (CMC too) I'll be in Somerset, NJ from the 14th - 21st still. But I'll be stress free and cheering from the side. I'm trying my best to be positive about this disappointment - but when I see enough Audi A4's at Waterfest or watch the A4's ourperform the VW in the 1.8T challenge, I'm sure I'll remember how to smile! =) Appologies to the anxious,...
