Default Only when it's cold...or does it happen all the time.

If it happens even after the car is warmed up, the second gear syncro might be toast. $$$ to repair.

Default I'd try some nice tranny fluid before repairing. I have a bit of that problem too.

If it gets a bit better when warm, then your synchro hopefully won't be shot. If not, then I say you could be screwed.

Default Don't know...you have to pull the tranny...

If it only happened once...these cars can grind a little in second on a cold shift. Try LaR H 88's suggestion. Get some good synthetic tranny fluid (search for brand and weight...amsoil and redline fluids are popular) in the transmission, and see if that improves the shifting. Odds are it will if this is the first time you've noticed anything strange. That'll cost you about $100 tops.

Default 2nd. Redline MT-90 fluid helped my shifting from 1st to 2nd.

Of course the 1st to 2nd shift in a VW/Audi generally is the toughest shift to engage. In colder weather that shift is going to be hard, especially if the tranny fluid hasn't warmed up a bit, a nice technique to try is double-clutching from 1dt to 2nd gear.. works wonders in the cold.

Do the synchros go bad in these 5spd like they do in the S4 6spd?

Default If you're hard on the tranny, yes, they'll go...

but they aren't made of glass like the S4 trannies, so if you're a good Audi owner, they'll last a lifetime. Unfortunately, that cold second gear crunch will hurt them over time. If you're not double clutching, or shifting very gingerly when the tranny is cold, that will take it's toll. Not sure how significant it would be....

I wonder why the S4 tranny is so fragile. You'd think the parts would be similar across platforms.

Default Here is how mine went

Car bought brand new 1.8T QM 2001. 1st and 2nd winter, no shift problems. 3rd winter 1st to 2nd is troublesome only very cold mornings for the first few minutes of drive. This is my 4th year, fall time when wheather started to get cold, I had trouble shifting 1st to 2nd some mornings. Also it was time for 50,000 mile last warranty included service. Mentioned the problem to the dealer, of course it was a sunny day, they couldn't replicate it. After that it got worse and worse. Now it doesn't matter cold warm. I need to get it repaired someday. So far I am even afraid to call and ask for the price to get it repaired. Why do I think some parts in this car is of low material quality.
Last year I wasn't double clutching from 1st to 2nd. This year I did that whole winter, but it was too late. It shouldn't go out like that anyways in the first place if you ask me.

But give me a break, they sell this car as sports sedan, (or so I thought). Where's the fun to drive a sports sedan on which you have to spend an extra second or more from 1st to 2nd on top of the turbo lag?

I have also either a vacuum leak or bad MAF right now.
Whatever...
