Default temp sensor

Repost from yesterday: Where exactly is the coolant temp sensor on a 2.8 12v?
Past warranty so I need to find and fix to stop constantly changing temp.

Default I don't know exactly where it is, but...

I have the same car with the same problem. I took it to forign car repair shop and they said that it is no big deal to put in, so I'm assuming that means it's pretty accessible. I'm taking it in to be fixed at the end of the month since he said that it's not harming the car.

I have 99 2.8 A4. I had the same problem. The temperature gage on the dash was going up and down. It shouldn't hurt the car. The dealer did something around the back of the engine toward the firewall. Try to remove the plastic engine cover. If you stand in front of the car, the area you should look at is toward your left, between the firewall and the engine. There are a bunch of harness connections there to the engine block. Try to trace to see if you can spot the sensor. I am sure they did something in that area because after I got my car back, I saw trace of coolant in that area so I would assume they open something there to replace the sensor. Hope this help. I know how you feel when you are drive with the flutuating gage. Good Luck. Let me know if you have any luck.

Default Re: found it

Located temp sensor, but all wiring etc is running across top of area so looks almost impossible to get at without doing some take apart. While digging around back there I took off small hose running from left bank to air intake system, was full of thick white substance. I hope it is not what I think it is. Any Ideas?
