URGENT question re ignition control module
Does a new igntition control module need time to break in on a '97 1.8T engine? I having trouble with one I just installed and am wondering if there is any reason not to put my old one back in before I leave for a road trip tonight.
The story is, I suspected my module was bad, so I went to buy a new one. The shop I went to verified the problem but wanted to charge me a bunch of labor to "program" the new module. I said I'd just buy the part and install it myself, since the stupid thing sits right on top of the airbox. So he sells me one that looks right but has a different part number than anything in the archives. I put in in and the car seems slightly worse than before. It is still misfiring under load, but now it wants to stall periodically.
Unless the part just needs a few miles to acclamate itself, I figure I'll put the old one back and then take the car to the dealer. Anyone have any other advice?

You probably have the wrong part number...
buy the correct part from the dealer, and return the faulty/wrong part to the mechanic you brought it from. If he wants proof that it's wrong or bad...show him how the car runs with the correct part, vs. the one he provided.
