Default Push the button marked "OFF". It should stay off until you turn it back on.

Turn off the climate control before you take your key out

Keep pushing the decrease (-) button until they disappear. This will turn the system off.

Default On a '98...

I hit the snowflake button (like ECON on newer models),which deactivates the compressor. Then I adjust the fan speed to suit my liking. After restarting the car, mine stays where I left it.

You can't outsmart it. Resistance is futile! Climate control will assimilate you.

Default Strange. My '97 stays off. I turn the fan all the way down until off and it stays that way.
