Blinking Engine Light

Default Blinking Engine Light

So I come home the other night and my car starts to hesitate and shake when I put it into gear. Then the check engine light begins to blink and the car starts to smell like something is burning. So I look at the manual and it says that if the check engine light is blinking then the cat converter could be not functioning. So I pop the hood and the cat converter is glowing red, and I've never noticed this before, so the next day I get a new one and replace the old one. No more glowing but its running a little better, but still getting the blinking light. So I disconnected the battery to see if that would reset the ecu. Nothing take it to get scan and these are the codes I got. P0102, P0444 and P0302 any help would be great. Thanks

Default Tip #1: Don't drive when the car is shaking and you have a blinking CEL.

Tip #2: Don't replace stuff w/o checking the forum first or consulting an Audi mechanic (not the manual that came with the car).

Tip #3: Post full vag-com error codes (with description, not just numbers)

Tip #4: Don't drive the car when it's obvious that something is majorly wrong.

Tip #5: Don't drive the car with a blinking CEL.

The symptoms that you've described sound like a textbook case of a failed coilpack (shaking, hesitation, red cat, smell, etc).

Your codes:

P0102: MAF may need replacement
P0444: not sure
P0302: Misfire detected on cylinder 2.

Replace the coilpack on cylinder 2. You should've done that in the first place.

Or and did I mention that you shouldn't drive the car witha blinking CEL?

Default You replaced the catalytic converter?

Holy overkill dude. You have a coilpack failure. $30 at dealership, 10 second job to swap.

Ok so I fixed the coil and now that is working but the car is still doing the exact same thing as before and the cat is getting red again. Whats the next thing I should be looking for?

Default Replace the #2 coilpack and clear the codes. If they reappear later, deal with them then.

After you replace the coilpack the CEL will still be on (solid) but will dissapear within 2-4 days.

Vag-com is a software programs that allows you do read all the fault codes and do other things.

I assumed that you were using a vag-com.
It gives a more detailed description such as:

P0302 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected

Yes, those symptoms seemed to scream out "coilpack." Replacing the cat seems a bit like another quote, said by my high school history teacher:

"Get the axe, there's a fly on baby's head!"
