CEL, loud engine fan & engine temperature
My 2002 A4 1.8T has approx. 58k miles. During last month or so, when the outside temperature is below 40F and I drove at highway speeds, there were several occasions where the engine temperature did not go above 1/4 on the gauge. It should be noted that when I turn off the climate control in the interior, the engine temperature would goes up toits optimal setting - in the center of the gauge. I also noticed that the loud engine cooling fan is on most of the times, but when the interior climate is turned off, the fun disengages. Previously, I would notice the engine fan turn on only on hot summer days.
For the last two weeks, the outside temperature has been around 50F and the engine warm up properly to its optimal operating temperature. Nonetheless, the loud cooling fan engages very frequently.
Yesterday, while the engine was warm, I got a Check Engine Light. The fan continues to turn on very frequently. Since I am out of the warranty, does anyone know how complecated it is to replace the fan controller which seems to be the culprit here? Any other suggestions as to what may be causing theses issues? Has anyone had the dealer fix this propblem after the warranty expired?

My temp gauge did a similar deal. Culpit: fan control module. Temp sensor was OK.
to BklynA4: Sensor repair is fairly straight forward, at the back of the engine block. There has been a write up published on how to do it.
As for the fan control module, I don't know where it is, so I'm not sure how big the job is. My replacement was at 45k, under warranty.

Audi might pay for 75% of the part..
same problem happened to me, except it was during the summer. Eventually, I overheated on the BQE one morning when I turned on my A/C. The car was towed to Life Quality and the rep told me there's a program that pays for repairs on cars slightly outside of the warrantry. I think i had 55K at the time. Audi paid for 75% of the part, and the rep worked with me on the labor rate. Problem was that the old fan module had to be upgraded from 300w to 600w, which is laboer intensive. audi no longer makes the 300w module.
