having Navi and XM antennas installed right now...quick question

Dash will work for XM but you may get some dropouts (m)
If the roof blocks the signal, the sound will cut out. Example: if you are going north, down a slight grade, it will probably cut out (the satellites are to the south in the sky).
If you drive mainly in DC, there are plenty of ground repeaters so it wouldn't be a problem.
Personally, if I were having them installed inside, I'd put them on the "hat shelf" near the back window... that way you don't have to see them every day.

MY GPS for my NAV is mounted front and center under dash...
And only loses sat signal in tunnels or garages. Of course there are more NAV sats to lock on to, though. But it works better than I thought.

Navi and XM probably need to go on the dash in the back.
but with XM, you will get a lot of dropped signals. i had the antenna inside but got frustrated, so i said heck with it and moved it outside on the roof and now not one dropped signal.
XM is coming out with newer antennas and they are so small. soon, there will be inside glass-patch antennas too which is what I am patiently waiting for.

I agree with antenna location
Best place is on the outside. On my beater Honda, it was on the inside, and it had way too many dropouts. Now it's on the outside trunklid and is way better. On my Audi, I have it on the back edge of the roof and it is even better there.
