MIL light on, not making temp... Thermostat?
Driving home tonight my MIL light came on. I noticed my temp gauge barely moved. I did have heat in the cabin, but the outside temp was moderate (50's). Is this most likely a t-stat problem?
I SFTA, and saw a lot of good stuff (including Matt Devo's how-to for t-stat swap). I did not see anything linking the low temp to the MIL light though...
BTW, it's a 2002 1.8TQM. Roughly 75k miles.
Thanks.

Got one, but....
USB on laptop just crapped out. Gotta get my other laptop from work tomorrow. Just curious if this was a simple one without VAG-COM...
I'll pull codes tomorrow.
Thanks.

thermostat indeed, the e-thermostats in our cars actually have very short life
and should be changed every 60k, apparently heat cycle through weather changes and our hot running ULEV cars just chews through parts.
my car at 50k takes nearly 10 minutes to reach operating temperature, new tstat will cut that in 1/2. also my tstat at 50k and operating temp will drop to almost 1/4 mark if i hold the rpm at 3k in park.

If the ECU controlled heater element in the thermostat assembly, is energized ..
improperly, the thermostat will not control engine temp resulting in the low coolent temp. Or, the wax motor mechanical tstat mechanism is simply stuck open. The worst case scenario is the ECU is faulty. VAG-COM scan, and post back the DTC/s that exist associated with the MIL/CEL light ON.
