Default Oil color doesn't matter..but could it be THIS black after 50 miles?

I have a 04 ultrasport with 64k miles. Last week I had a "reputable" shop do an oil change when it was in for other things. I had to drain some because it was overfilled(1/4 inch past the bend on the dipstick). This is the black oil that came out...it's solid black. I know color doesn't say much..but it's hard to believe that Castrol synthetic 5-40 can turn this black after ~50 miles. Thoughts? Could they have forgot to change the oil?

Default "Over fill" and "reputable" don't fit together.....

How much did you have to drain out?

It's still hard for me to read my dipstick after a hundred miles on new oil, the oil is still so clean. New oil with new filter should not look like that after 50 miles, if they did a complete drain and change.

IMO, anyone doing an oil change should check the oil level on the dipstick after the oil change to check that they put the required amount in -- either too little or too much. If they did, they would have known they overfilled. Then again, when servicing my car at the dealer while under warranty, they overfilled my car on two separate occasions -- go figure.

Default I took out about 1/2 qt at least..

It's still a bit over full but not bad. The shop is well known..and I don't want to bash them (yet). I will be giving them a call Monday morning though.

How long did you go on your last change? A lot stays behind on change. Is the filter new?

I didn't change the oil..but I'm assuming the shop used a new filter. I just bought this car..so it's unknown exactly when the last change was done. Maybe it just needs a back to back oil change to clean things up?

Default Send it out for analysis to Blackstone.

Explain the situation to them and see what turns up.
