P0322 code and still running

My CEL popped this morning and I didn't have a vag-com, but I stopped at Autozone to scan. P0322 popped and I brought it to my hangar to check it out. Well, upon further inspection, my engine speed sensor isnt there. How can the car still run? I've looked for loose wiring and everything. I noticed the missing plug the other night while doing a tire rotation, but didn't think it was the sensor, I thought it was the port to find TDC...

Any suggestions? Besides replacing the sensor...

where does it connect?

2004 A4 Quattro 1.8t stock...

ignore parts of the last post.

-I do have the p0322 code.
-I do have the Engine Speed sensor where it should be...

What I don't know...

There is a similar size and shaped port (as in the Engine speed sensor), but it is located on the transmission below and behind the oil filter. I can see a gear in it and there is currently nothing there....

What could it be?

What appears to be the issue? The crank position sensor is located behind the oil filter and has a grey connector on the firewall. It’s part of the engine, not the transmission. There is also a hole in the transmission but nothing should be in that hole.
