So, I test drove a 2004 Passat 1.8T 5spd 4Motion last night...
I liked it. A bit lacking in the power department, but everything else felt great. I was suprised that even with 4" of wheel gap and 15" wheels/tires it felt pretty solid and stable. The shift action is a huge improvement over my 3.0 6spd, which now feels long, vague, and rubbery in comparison. I hate to say that I might be leaving the fold, but it's time to crunch the numbers and see if I can work a decent deal.
Anybody else driven one of these or considered it? Your thoughts?

Drive Passats every now and again......my opinion...
From a service stand point, this car will be in the shop much more than the Audi will, and I think you will miss Audi build quality after you've bought a Passat. I know they are the same company, but my experience with them (Porsche, Audi, VW, BMW dealership) is that they do not hold up near as well, and the interior materiels are second rate.
As far as my experience driving them, they just seem boring and blah to me. For some reason, I have fun in my Audi when I drive, I just can't get into that rythme in a Passat.

I drove a 2003 Passat 1.8T prior to getting my car
It felt like it had way too much weight for that little 1.8T engine. Even the VR6 didn't feel like enough power. It didn't seem to have as good brakes or handling as the A4, and it defintitely wasn't as fun to drive. The 4motion didn't really impress me the same way quattro did. And I don't know about the 5spd since I drove an automatic.

Since it's essentially a bigger B5 A4......
it shouldn't be all that different. The engine is the same that is in the B6 A4 1.8T as is the torsen system. The gearbox is the same as in the 02-03 B6 A4 as well. The drivetrain is the exact same as the B5 A4 as well - torsen and all. While VW's in general have more issues than Audi's - it's primarily due to the MKIV chassis cars not the "B" chassis cars like the Passat, which have proven to be quite reliable. As for the suspension etc. the same mods apply to the Passat as they do the A4. You just can't get a factory sports suspension (you can in Europe though).

I had a 2002 Passat V6 5speed
Other than being a major bad luck charm, the car was awesome. I have to say after going from the top VW to the bottom Audi that it was a huge step down for the same money. I like my Audi and it has been good so far but it doesn't have the options my Passat had nor the room. I would wait for the new style Passat but mainly because I already owned the old style. VW is way more value for the money than the Audi.

Yeah, I know the new model is on it's way, but the incentives are pretty sweet...
0% financing, good bargaining off MSRP, warranty (my A4 has none left), more space, etc. Plus, I'll still be in the family... :>
