Default Purchasing Across State Lines

Anybody have anything I should look for when buying a car in a neighboring State? Resident in IA, buying in IL.

I bought in New Jersey, I registered and live in New York... no issue at all, I got a 30 day temp registration and within a week all my NY papers and plates came through, easy peasy

Ditto, I was even charged SC taxes which were much less than NC taxes. Very easy, dealer took care of everything and had much experience with out of state sales. Plates did arrive right as temp. tag expired.

I bought in North Carolina & live in Virginia. No problems, got my tags in about 10 days.

Assuming you're having the dealer register the car in IA for you, then you should only be charged IA sales tax (not IL).

The guy really lowballed me on the trade, I mean really... basically blew away any price advantage he had.

Sell your car locally on Craigslist or take it to CarMax.
You should be better able to get what the car is actually worth.

No carmax near me, and I don't love the idea of selling myself. I don't mind selling it at or around the trade-in value shown at the various online sources even though a friend in the industry said they are a little high, but right now I am $2000 away from those.

I went on to one of the dealers sites and looked up a similar car they were selling for $22 (they offered me 16k) and sent him an email pointing this out. We'll see if that gets me anywhere.
