They do flip open to reveal a security bolt.

The black feet are just shy of 3" (7.5cm) tall.
The shortest distance between the roofline and the bottom of a rail is 2.5" (6.3cm)

Here are the pics you requested, the last one being the included torque wrench for the security bolts.

Cheers!

Hey- looks great. I also have 2009 A4 Avant Prestige, S-Line, Brilliant Black. I am thinking to go with the audi bars and the thule spirit cargo box. It is 5.5in longer (90.5in versus 85in). Do you think that it will fit? And, why did you choose 611? Many thanks in advance.

Nice car!

In all honesty, I chose the 611 over the others because of aesthetics more than anything. The black color matches the car, and the the charcoal "X" matches the brake dust coated wheels pretty well!
The fact that it supposedly has the better hardware, build quality, and other propaganda listed by the marketing types was simply a bonus to me.
(this being my first ever cargo box purchase, I had no frame of reference.)

I would say the biggest concern about fitment is allowing enough room for the hatch to open. The box can slide fore and aft quite a bit to allow enough clearance for the hatch, but then it depends on how much overhang you prefer over the windshield.
As you can see from the side view pic, the 611 has a slight overhang, and obviously the 689 Spirit would have more.

Hope that helps, and feel free to ask any other questions!

Cheers.

Obviously there is the long stuff: snow boards, skis, etc.
But in our case it's just simply more of everything else: clothes, beach stuff, and whatever else the boss-lady thinks is a necessity

She's still trying to figure out how to get 3 bikes to go along, but without a trailer hitch available, she may have to go without....

Answer: anything sandy or muddy that you wouldn't want in the back of your Audi.

Pino - I enjoy checking out your photos, as I wait for delivery of same car! I like the turtle top - if I get bars for both, it should be interchangeable between my wife's A6 and the new A4...

Mind if I ask about what you paid for the 18" winter wheel set up?

Sorry - probably bad form to resuscitate this old thread in its entirety just for the pics...
