2017 A4 US -- still getting crazy good MPG
#21
for my previous tank i was driving at 35mph minimum (usually more) per trip but when i manually checked after refueling i was at 33mph. my estimated range is also always 625 mi after refueling regardless of how i actually drive so i never get to know how much i have left to drive even when im at my last bar. i feel like im going to be left on the side of the road one day if i dont immediately refill after the bar turns red.

Strangely enough, I've found my MPG recording to be very accurate. Ever since I bought my CPO 2017 A4 2 years/28K miles ago (CPO), I've been tracking my mileage with every fillup (old habit of an ex-Prius owner). While there's some variation fillup-to-fillup, the car's MPG readings have almost always been within 4% either way for any given fillup, and the car's actually been underestimating my MPG by 1.5% overall. (For the record, I get 30-33 MPG on the highway, and about half that for my short-trip city driving here in Chicago.)

I have tracked every fuel purchase since I bought my car in May 2017, and my average mpg is 23.29 mpg over a bit more than 23K miles. That involves a mix of city and highway driving, but mostly city driving. And I drive fairly aggressively--I know I could do better if I drove like my wife. Over the last year the average improved to 24.08 mpg. One tank (411 mi) I got my best mpg of 36.35 which involved almost exclusively highway driving. Our Allroad gets up to about 37 mpg on long highway drives, and that is with some crossbars on top (but without a box attached!) which probably rob about 1mpg. Not sure I'd call it "crazy good" efficiency, but I'm happy with it.

I've also found the on-board readings to be almost dead-on with calculating actual miles and actual fill. I haven't checked my odometer yet - my old BMW read about 2% high, if GPS is to be trusted.
Here's a long-term view - since I bought it in February. It was over 30 a couple of weeks ago before a bunch of around-town driving. 34-36 on the highway over hundreds of miles (easy to get it to read 40+ short term on the right sections of the PA TP) - 540 before a fill one time. I haven't played the "how many miles after it hits 0 and tells me to fill up immediately" game yet. It does fill almost exactly 15.8g at 0 miles remaining, with 1-2 pump clicks.
Pretty good for a rated 31mph highway, 27 combined. (standard DCT quatto. The Ultra is rated at 37H, 31C, so I would expect more from one of those.

I had a long round-trip to pick up my daughter from camp today, so I figured I'd see what pure highway was.
After a fill, I reset the trip odometer. I then reset the short-term 1.8 miles later as I got to a steady speed off the PA Turnpike entrance ramp. Three rest area stops impacted mileage slightly - dropped 0.2mpg each time - and combined with traffic/tunnels to keep the average speed down - cruise was typically set at 75. I took a photo just getting off at my exit.
After about 10 miles of city driving, I was back on the TP headed home. One stop and then a solid 15 minute slow/stop-and-go segment impacted time and mph, though mpg didn't suffer much. Photo was at the red light at the end of the exit ramp.
Without pit stops/traffic, I think 40mpg and 70mph over a 5.5 hour, 390 mile highway round-trip (eliminating elevation changes as a variable) is a reasonable result. Range is indicating 570 total, even with 10 miles of city and 10-15 minutes of stop and go on the highway. Averaging 40 says that 600 miles should be possible on a tank.

I haven't noticed. The trip above was from the local Costco, which I can check next time I'm there. But this weekend's trip was a couple of gas stations that just happened to be on the way.
I took the shorter, lower speed route home from dropping my daughter off to school - 30 miles shorter, but mostly 60-65mph limit state highways, about exactly the same time. Going the longer way out (Interstates, 70-75 limits), I averaged about 38. This was on the way back, including the first 5 miles through town and a food/gas stop. I could probably squeeze out another 0.5 if I reset it when up to speed on the highway and drove straight through.
And the computer does think 600 on a tank is realistic.
