Default Buying an Audi! Yay!

I searched the whole forum here, but didn't seem to find what I wanted. But I'll tell ya, I love these Audis!

Now, as an outsider to the Audi world, and will soon be buying an A6, I'm finding what seems like an unusual amount of problems that Audi's seem to experience. I know people are more likely to discuss their problems rather than upsides, but it still makes me wonder.

I'm considering a 2002 A6 3.0 with or w/o Quattro. Which years would everybody say is the best as far as reliability is concerned? I will probably be purchasing a 7 year, 100,000 mile extended warranty for $2500 just for peace of mind. But that doesn't mean I'm OK with a car that will break down every year.

For those who have reliabile Audis, speak up! How many miles do you have? What year of car?

Any common problems for 2002 non-turbo models?

Default if you're buying an 02 A6 from a dealership, it should already be CPO (certified pre -owned)

and that comes with Audi Assured 6/100,000 mile extended warranty. Granted it doesn't cover wear and tear parts like CV boot and Tie rods, but it does cover big things.. like my tranny (it recently blew and I'm getting it replaced under the Audi Assured warranty).

OH AND CONGRATS! I KNOW THE FEELING.. I'm on my second A6 in 10 months of Audi ownership. my first A6 was a 2000 2.7T (bought last December) and my second one (current car) 2001 4.2 (bought 4 months ago).

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY!!

Default but subtract the vehicles mileage from the 100K warranty

i recently traded my 92 100 with 163k for a 99 a6q 30v avant with 83k. i set aside $1500/year for maintenance. some years were less, some were more.

Default Owned my 4.2 for about a year

I've put about 18k miles, for a total of 64k+, and I've had nothing but the greatest experience with this car. I had a power window go on me, but with the resources of this forum, was able to fix it myself. Besides that, just regular maintenance.

Default Good luck! I'm on my second A6....

#1. was a 98 2.8, had 1 1/2 years, 80K miles put control arms on it and that was about it. Present, 2001 2.7T, almost 2 years, 55K miles, other than the basic stuff, no problems!
I love my Audis!!

Default I owned my A4 3.0 2002 for 2 years w/o a single problem...

It was chipped (wetterauer) 2 months after I owned it. I would suggest quattro. The handling is amazing. I sold it because I got the mod bug and I wanted more performance. So I just purchased a 2001 2.7T A6 6spd. I also own an all road, great cars, welcome to the family.

Default VW/Audi products are usually quite reliable, but can occasionally be problematic...

I've had 9 VW and Audi cars, 3 of them bought new.

For example, I had a new 1988 Scirocco 16V for 13 years, ran it REALLY hard, and it was nearly bulletproof, as were most of the others.

Another, an 1977 Audi Fox purchased with 111K miles for $300, ran for 33K more miles with only oil changes (before the oil pump seized).

My only "problem car" was a new 1994 Passat GLX (w/VR6 and 5-speed, fast and lots of fun). It seemed to shed a lot of irritatingly expensive peripheral parts (such as $200 A/C control modules) and $35 headlight switches.

Bottom line -- if you take good car of it, the real mechanical stuff (engine, etc.) usually never dies...

Default Re: if you're buying an 02 A6 from a dealership, it should already be CPO (certified pre -owned)

Oh, that explains why the dealers want so much more for their used cars. The aftermarket warrenty is 1 year longer, but it would be specific to certain dealerships and I'd have to pay a deductable.

Also, the dealer warranty would permit me to get a turbo model, since the turbos are an extra $1000 for the aftermarket warranty.

Any preferance between the dealer extended warranty and the aftermarket?

Default 2000 A6 2.7T 6 speed - 86k miles...

I bought mine almost 2 yrs ago and have put on 43k miles with real good luck. Only big expense was the timing belt/water pump/ cam seal job at about 70K miles - but that was planned maintenance. Pretty expensive, but planned. Total bill was I think $1,800 or so. Other than that, a couple ball joints and that's it. Of course, I spent a chunk of change on BBS rims, slotted Zimmerman rotors, a set of Toyo Proxes-4 tires, and I'm having Eibach springs put on tomorrow, but those are optional expenses.

I felt the same way as you mentioned - when I 1st visited the forums, I saw all the trouble posts, but then I realized I've never sat down and started a thread "Great - another month has gone by with no trouble and blissful driving!" Good news doesn't travel! I'll buy another Audi in a heartbeat. Only trouble is, I can't part with my 6 speed...but I have sat in the new '05 A6 and am deeply in love! Test drive next week....

Default 98 A6Q, now with 105k miles

Watch for suspension gremlins; would definitely go for the quattro; otherwise, what's the point?
