Default That Damn Metal Plate Surrounding the Shifter...

Looked beautiful when new, but it seems that every day a new scratch or nick appears (4.2 about 6 months old). I would rather have had wood in that area, as it wouldn't mark up as much. I remember reading posts that the underside of the metal plate has the hardware for the PRNDS lights, etc. and that it was like $700 bucks to replace. It is really the only part of the car's interior that to me at least, was not completely thought out. Any keys, easy pass, or whatever comes in contact with the plate and it gets dinged.

I am very surprised the new A8 will retain the metal plate.

I thought it's shiny plastic, which would explain the easy dings. Mine's 19 mo's old: 99.8% clean.

Default How do you keep scratching it? Mine has one very small nick...

after 31k miles...of course I don't have kids and don't keep loose crap in the car...

But, they should make it more durable for the normal people out there.

Default Last I checked, it was a bit over $200 for the part from the dealer. Probably

could get it a little cheaper from Clair parts. Mine got scratched from the vacuum cleaner nozzle at a detailer - last time I go to that shop. They wouldn't pay for it, claimed they didn't do it. The two small scratches aren't enough to make me want to spend that kind of $$.

Outside of those scratches, mine is unmarked after more than 18 months.

That is the only part of the tip car that I think looks cheesy, just looks like plastic IMO.

Default Try some stainless metal cleaner...

I use the same "Bartenders Friend" creme that I use to clean my stainless cooking pots. It cleaned up theat metal shift piece like new. It won't remove real deep scratches, but it worked for me.

Good luck all,

Default Don't use metal cleaner

I've read that it IS plastic with just a thin coating that looks like metal. I wouldn't use metal cleaner on it without confirming that it really is metal.

I used to think it looks good, but now I'm not so sure. It is bright enough so the reflection off of it on a sunny day can be very annoying.

Wood veneer would suit me fine. At the very least, if it isn't real metal, it should be.
