Default shifter plate scratches-any way to fix

I know it has been posted, before. The shifter design is dumb, an accident waiting to happen.
I have been careful, but the various people who have serviced my car over time have not. Has anyone, to date, figured a way to remove scratches from the shifter plate, or at least remove them? I have a'00 A6 Avant. From what I read on archived posts, the plate is integrated with the electronics below it, making it an absurd cost to just replace. Thanks. Let's hope the next generation A6 does not feature this "brilliant" interior trim design.

Default Plexus should remove some of the scratches from the clearcoat

It is a plastic polish that works well removing light scrathches from most plastic and clearcoated surfaces. It's available from Proper Auto Care -- link below.

Plexus plastic polish

Default If the scratches are anything like mine, Plexus won't do jack

The dealerships detailers scratch my cover plate with the hose frm their vacuum every time i go in for service. There's really no way to get the scratched out aside from replacing the plate.

Is my understanding correct that replacing that plate is a big deal?

Default that's what everyone says

You have to remove the black surround around the plate, then the entire shifter mechanism and the plate should come off from underneath somehow. The hardest part is getting it all back ina nd aligned nicely so thereisnt huge gaps between the shifter mechanism and the black surround.

Default great news.

They should leave the protective film in place that is on the shifter, when the car is shipped.
Sorry I didn't do that, myself.

Default If I had one I'd be very tempted to paint it with a hard enamel once it got scratched up. Metallic

coats on plastic usually = soft coating. Enamal paint may not be quite as hard? but you can touch it up.

Try blue magic (pep boys) very mild abrasive, but works, just be careful.
