New a6 - Boost Controller
Hey all. I currently have a chipped 2005 1.8T passat, and am looking to trade it for a 2003 A6 2.7T at a dealer. He tells me that it has a boost controller installed. I intend to chip the A6. I'm not sure what the boost controller indicates as far as other current mods, and how to investigate this. I was hoping to buy stock. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Re: The boost controller indicates that the PO probably didn't understand proper modding and...
Form what I've read, if the boost controller is in parallel with the DV, it may reduce boost spikes. If it replaces the DV, it's misunderstood chipping, since boost is constant without regard for fueling or turbo capabilities. The car is very clean and has low mile (65K). Can I, or a mechanic, tell any more about condition, particlularly turbos. I'm tempted to buy, but don't want blown turbos in the near future. Would a test drive with the constoller set high tell me anything (turbo noise, etc?).

Is it a manual boost controller?
and you're close, but the MBC would be in parallel with the N75 valve, or standalone. DVs would always be present.
Short of pulling the downpipes, you can't really get a look at/your hands on any part of the turbos. Pull codes from the computer and see if there are any overboost conditions. Ideally you could log it and see where it is boosting now - that might tell you more.

It is.
The independent dealer tells me it is a manual boost controller, and that you turn a screw to adjust boost. Would I need an audi dealer with vag com to pull codes?

Anyone with an OBD-II scanner can pull codes - better to have a VAG-COM though for specificity
I'd be very wary of a car with an MBC that I could not talk to the PO about WHY it is in there. Plus, if it has no boost gauge, how would they even know how much they changed the boost? I'd look elsewhere to get a car that you can KNOW about the modifications, not have to guess.
