Power Steering Squealing
My power steering on my 2000 A6 2.7T squeals when I drive and turn either right or left. I think that my power steering pump is going bad. Can someone help?

pump squeal or belt?
Squirt some water on the serp belt and see if the squeal goes away. If it does, replace the belt and tensioner and other pulleys the serp belt rides on.

"Did you check your PS fluid level? If low, sucking in air & that can ruin the pump."
Whether its low, or sucking air through a loose fitting (or hardened rubber) this is common, and fairly easily fixed. Look for aeration in the fluid.

Very true about the suction side and that nasty growl, but unfortunately when the pump shaft seal wears air will enter the pump and ruin the bearing and or vanes hence the squeal of death, this happened on the old 01 the daughter drives early last year and the pump wasn't that bad to replace outside of the extensive flushing of the fluid I did until it was clear and light green.

S6 2000
Audi S6 2000, recently the power steering has started squealing when cold. How can I verify if there is air in the fluid or if a seal is leaking? There is no oil under my car.

My friend replaced the fluid 12 months ago I am not sure how he performed the flushing and if the filter is clogged. I opened the power steering fluid cap but I did not find any filter. How do you check the filter? How do I cjeck if it is a belt issue?
