I noticed the same thing on early morning start ups, slight rattle. I just hit 60k miles on my 2013 A7.

Thanks for excellent write up. Do you know if it's possible to remove the upper timing chain without removing the transmission or do you need to be able to remove the upper timing chains lower sprocket? Did you measure the length of your old and new chains?

I'm at the same point with my '99 A6 2.8L 30V V6 Quattro (automatic) where I have the engine hooked up to the hoist, have a jack under the tranny to support it, have removed all bolts through the bellhousing, but cant get the motor and tranny to separate (everything else is disconnected). I can pry the bellhousing from the motor a bit at the lower left and right sides, but can't get them apart further than a 1/16th crack. I did pry the torque converter through the rounded oblong hole bottom center, but to no avail. I'm sorta stuck without a way to go forward - any suggestions? Does this normally require a hammer, chisel and brute force to separate them, or should they part easily?

Can't separate motor from gearbox

Nevermind, I found a remaining bolt that I thought was out. I was feeling back there for the bolts and felt a hole which I thought meant the bolt was out, but it was further down the back of the motor. With the remaining bolt removed it came apart easily.
