Default engine speed sensor

Anybody have any experience with the engine speed sensor aka crankshaft sensor.

In the past two weeks I have had 4 cranks but wont start. The only thing that fixed it was to wait. The VAG COM scan came back with multiple faults, a few of them were created by the long crank non start. But the one below could be the problem.

16706/P0322/000802 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal

Possible Symptoms
Engine shuts off
Engine doesn't start
Speedometer inoperative
Glow Plug Indicator Lamp (K29) flashes
Possible Causes
Engine Speed Sensor (G28) loose
Engine Speed Sensor (G28) faulty
Possible Solutions
Check Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
Special Notes
The Engine Speed Sensor (G28) is also used as a reference sensor for the crankshaft position.

I am having a hard time figuring how to remove the sensor from the motor, it's blind job with limited space. Has anybody done this before?

The sensor is mounted on the transmission case, very close to where it meets the engine.
It's held in by only one screw.
As far as positioning of the sensor, it is towards the rear base of the driver side cylinder head.

These sensors do fail and the engine won't start or run without it. Be glad it failed at home and not somewhere far away :-)

On the C5, it is mounted to the transmission housing. Just above and to the left of the driver's side axle.

thanks for the help, it was not that bad, small hands and longs thin arms would have made things easier. It's started every time so far, knocking on wood.

seems intimidating because it's blind, but get a few mirrors and get a feel for where everything is before you turn any screws, and it's actually very easy

parts was like $75 at autohaus AZ
