All this nonsense with electric steering, all to pick up 0.2MPG.

And less moving parts with reduced maintenance and better longevity over the long haul. It also allows for tech like the lane departure option. All manf. are going this route. Soon you will no longer be able to buy a new car with hydraulic steering. After 15 years of EPS, the improvements in feel have been dramatic and will continue to get even better over time. This software update should hopefully illustrate how the EPS system can be tweaked for initial design refinement and correct issues like we've seen.

I don't need all these electronic nannies to drive a car. You will never get the same feedback from electric steering, that hydraulic steering provides. Electro hydraulic, like McLaren uses, will hopefully make its way into lower priced cars someday. I don't think I have read a single review that gives electric steering better marks than the hydraulic steering systems they replaced.

Never? History has shown that technology never stops advancing and improving. My 2013 A6 EPS is about 95% of the way there now and I wouldn't bet against Audi and others from EPS achieving 100% parity with hydraulic. Better hang onto your hydraulic steering car because in the not too distant future, my guess is you won't be able to buy a new car that still uses it.

My car had its second service last week, with 34k miles on the clock, and they updated the electric steering software as part of the work carried out.

Brought the wife's car in for service. They did the power steering update, the ECM would not take the update and locked the steering, LOL. Took them another day to fix it.

Sounds like the tech may not have completely followed the directions the first time. Good to hear they got it resolved though.
