Default 2003 compatibility?

Is there anything different about the sysytems in an 03 A8 that would prevent (or make easier) the RNS E,Bluetooth,XM,Phatbox upgrade? There are so few of them in existance that I don't know about the differences otherr than ON STAR and tire press monitor. Know of one for sale but want to be sure it can be upgraded.

Default 02 and 03's already have the CAN bus at the radio

That's about it. Worse comes to worse, you tap the CAN bus at the instrument cluster. The Symphony II is CAN bus enabled, where the Symphony I is not.

If you got a car that had navigation already, and bought a wiring harness from Ted Basile, then he would make a plug and play wiring harness that goes into the existing wiring in the trunk where the Nav disc unit is. It's the only thing on the infotainment CAN bus on the 00 and 01's.

Default Paul - Remind me again on why run the wire harness to the rear Nav wiring

was this to enable the CD changer to still function? I didn't do this with my RNS-E mod and the CD changer does not work but I can use both OEM Nav system and the RNS-E at the same time if I wish. The OEM Nav will not have audible instructions but works as normal otherwise.

Default Ran the wires to the rear for the XM module and bluetooth

Your CD changer should work, mine does. Maybe Ted made something special about the wiring harness. Oh yes, it was a pass through, I had to get a cable from Crutchfield to patch it.

Default Wait....I'm wrong, a CD changer should work no problem

You have a plug and play wiring harness. It connects the CD changer to the RNS-E. Only if you want to add XM do you need the pass through cable....the XM tuner passes through the CD input when in CD mode.

If your CD changer is not working, I would guess your RNS-E is improperly coded.

The last digit of the RNS-E should be:

0xxxxx?: Options II
1 - default
2 - TV-Tuner
3 - CD-Changer
4 - TV-Tuner and CD-Changer
5 - Multifunction Steering Wheel
6 - TV-Tuner and Multifunction Steering Wheel
7 - CD-Changer and Multifunction Steering Wheel
8 - TV-Tuner, CD-Changer und Multifunction Steering Wheel

It's either going to be 3 or 7 for you. However, I don't think you have a CAN bus enabled MFSW control module or made the wiring changes, if that is the case, it should be 3.

Let me know what it is, the CD changer should be enabled.

Default Coding and Fault codes mainly due to Can Bus MFSW...

Paul,

Here is my Vag-Com download. I think my coding is fine but likely a issue with my wiring or I remember someone mentioning grounding or lack of can cause this when installing the RNS-E. Most of the fault codes are due to me not having the CAN-BUS Control module installed for the MFSW.

Default Recode it from 0109117 to 0109113 and I bet your CD changer will work

You shouldn't have it coded for the MFSW.

And why do you have it coded for a Lamborghini? That is the second digit.

Code it for an A6 or A4, that might also be making it not work correctly.

Personally, I had to code mine for an A4, as an A6 I could not get a speed signal.

Default Thanks - I'll give it a try

I guess I should only program MFSW after I have put the CAN MFSW Controller in and not if I have the MFSW without the CAN? This is why the fault codes are present I assume since the RNS-E can't communicate with the MFSW since the MFSW controller is not the CAN version. Probably not hurting anything coded this way but fault codes will be there as long as I leave it this way.

I liked the Lamborghini start up screen and it seems to work the same (no problems navigating.) I have recently changed to A4 settings anyway to be more factory look but don't notice any difference with nav accuracy which is spot on. I have also tried R8 settings and it works fine with the exception of the RNS-E head unit stays on after I turn off the ignition and I'd worry about killing the battery.
