4.2 ltr v8 engine replacement.
hello all, new to the Audi scene,I am in New Zealand, parts for Audi's here are not easy to find, especially the older d2 platform, I am wanting to know which engines I can use to replace the engine in my 2000 d2 s8?can i use a d3 or d4 series engine or do i need to find a exact 2000 d2 s8 engine?my s8 is automatic transmission.thank you , Andrew.

Good question, you might be able to get another, later 5v 4.2 with the belt driven cams to work as a short block or maybe as a long block with some bodging.
I think the A8 went to the FSI and chain driven cams for model year 2007.

How much of an engine do you need?

s8 engine replacement
hi,my s8's engine is running fine at the moment but the previous owner didn't keep up with it's maintenance or services,it is quite high mileage so it's a. bit of a time bomb, i have heard some horror stories of engine failures,so i need to broaden my knowledge on which engines are suitable, most information i have only refers to power and efficiency not the compatibility to be adapted to other models,I do the maintenance and repairs to my vehicles and my friends Audi's,so any knowledge that can be shared will be most appreciated, thankyou,Andrew

I have not heard much about engine failures. If you do the cam chain tensioner service and replace the valvesprings in a reasonable time you should be OK in my opinion. I'm not sure the the valve spring failures are mostly in particular years but from what I read they are on higher mileage cars. Given the nature of the engine and gearing I am not surprised there are some spring failures.
Obviously you could do the valve steam seals and check the valve guides if you go in after the valve springs.
I think people who have had a broken valve spring have mostly avoided damage, likewise if a tensioner pad fails it's usually noisy first.
