A/C problems, refrigerant disappears
Hi and greetings from Finland! Our winters are cold but during summertime it is often hot and the A/C is useful.
My -98 A8 did not blow cold air. I went to a workshop for a fill of refrigerant R-134a and enjoyed fresh air for almost one month. Now the situation remains the same that it was in the start, no cold air available.
The guy in the workshop used a sniffer to detect leaks, and stated that the R-134a leaks in the cabin. This could be due to a leak in the evaporator.
Is the changing of the evaporator a difficult task?

It appears it's right after the HVAC Blower

It says once you take the blower out, remove the holder behind it, then you'll find the evaportator.....which you could remove. The evaporator also has o-rings on the piping going to it, which I would think would be the more likely place for it to leak.
I have the same problem as you, got my system charged this year and its performance has already degraded.

http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/heatac/fanreplace.html</a

I am also suspecting the evaporator o-rings. Can these be accessed from the hood compartment? Or from the cabin?
Is the refrigerant dangerous when leaking in cabin?

Everything is from the hood compartment
Just follow the two AC pipes, they go to the evaporator. It looks like they come in from the side, then they take a 90 degree bend and go to the top of the evaporator on the back side.
That's where I would expect them.
And no, I don't think it's a danger to have it leaking inside, if you're not on recirc the cabin air changes out every couple of minutes or sooner.....but don't sue me if I'm wrong!
:-)
I emailed you a couple of PDF's, there are two sets of o-rings that go to the evaporator.
