few qestions on brakes/rotors and retrofitting
Are the hats on rotors removable?
Also, how can I find out the depth of the rotors? I have some from a '01 Porsche Boxster and a friend of mine wants to retrofit the whole brake set from that car to a '00 Passat 1.8. Is this at all possible? I am aware that custom brackets may need to be made because that is what I was told about setting them up on my A8, which I later gave up on.

BIRA System 1 uses Porsche Boxster Front Calipers
It was an upgrade for the 91 200q and the old V8's with the UFO style rotors. The system one uses Porsche Boxster calipers, and 97-99 A8 rotors. Here's the description:
System 1
Uses Porsche Boxster 4-piston monobloc caliper over the 1999 Audi A8 312x25mm rotor. We have solutions to fit the '92-97 S4/S6, A4, A6, 1C, 2C(1), 5K, UrQ, '92-94' V8(1), VW Passat. Fits under 16" wheels.
You will need custom made brackets. So for your A8, there is no benefit (uses the same rotor, just different caliper).
But for your friend's Passat, they already have the design established.
If you want to do it yourself (design and build the brackets), it's probably going to be very difficult to deisgn and build, I would imagine a lot of hours would need to go into it.
That's why I went with BIRA system 6. They designed and built it, I just bought the brackets and hats.
Here's a few pics of the BIRA system 1.
