Help - Strange clattering noise on startup...
So recently I have been having this strange metallic clattering noise when I start the car after its been sitting for 8hr or so. It sounds sort of like change rattling around. I took it to a local shop and they initially thought it was the serp belt and ilder pulley and tensioner pulley. They replaced all but after install they saw that it did not solve the problem. They suspected it could be inside the timing belt housing (I doubt that tho as when I put the stethascope on the T belt housing I dont hear the clatter). I stuck the end of the scope on the oil pan and could here it pretty well. It seems to go away once the car is warmed up and driven a bit. I have no CELs or issues otherwise and the car runs strong, shifts well and the like. I have done 2 300mile plus trips over the past 2 weekends and no issues...just a little noise. Any ideas what this could be?

Audi Fanboy!
Same issue here............
It has been going on for a few months now and the independent Audi technician (who unfortunately is the only one around my neck of the boonies) said he thinks I need to have the timing belt replaced even though the timing belt was replaced in mid 04. Transmission was recently rebuilt and was worked on this past week including today to resolve some leaking from 2 seals.

Re: Help - Strange clattering noise on startup...
First see if there is any oil coming from the right rear valve cover area where the tensioner is located. Then pull the right valve cover (after the car has sat for awile)and first check to see it the plastic guide sleeve is on top of the tensioner and that the chain between the cams is tight on both sides of the tensioner. We have found cars where the guide is completely worn through and the chain is grinding "rails" into the tensioner. If you let it go; it will ever so slightly let the exhaust valves hit the top of the pistons resulting in the valves not properly seating and a slight miss at idle.
