This morning all of the sudden, the suspension in the front drivers side started to creak very loudly when turning.
It is very loud when sitting still (I'm thinking a ball joint somewhere) Its a very loud metal to metal creaking.
It only happens when steering input is applied. Back and forth, its a pretty reliable sound to demonstrate. Not PS pump related (it is in the suspension only)
Now, I know it could be many things. There are like some 9 or so ball joints in each corner of the suspension.
What is the possibility of a control arm instead of tie rods? (control arm = under 100 beans and 40 min of my time, tierod ends = going to a shop and alignment!)

Tie rods seem to be the weak link, but could be one of four control arm ball joints.
Sooner or later you are going to need to replace the whole lot. It is (in the long run) easier to bite the bullet and do all the control arms and tie rod ends at once. It is a real pain to get the upper control arm bolt out of the tower (very long pinch bolt), but other than that it is not a bad job. Alignment required, obviously. If it is the tie rod, just replace both outer tie rod ends. If it is a control arm, replace them all.

I've replaced all of the control arms at some point within the last 3 years.
I made the mistake of doing them as they failed, so I have forgotten which ones are which! I'm hoping its a control arm, so I dont have to track down a place for alignment. ECS no longer does servicing, so that alignment shop is out! Fred Baker, although reputable, is $$$. Oh well, I haven't really had an expensive issue for a whole year now. Its due I guess.

I have found that the quality of the replacement control arms is spotty at best.....
When I replace them again, I will only use (and pay dearly for) the Audi supplied (Febi?) control arms. Even though replaced relatively recently, it could easily be a control arm. I'd still look at the tie rod end first.

Funny mine was a tierod end-exactly the same symptoms-try squirting lubricant on
suspected joint-I found which one first by tech holdin his hand on the joint while I turned the wheel -then confirmed by squirting some CRC on the joint-creak gone and new tie rods to be fitted
