Default Pwr Steering Rack

Hi guys, I have an '02-S8 with a leaking Pwr Steering Rack. I'm told one from Germany is about $2,800.00 and 2-5 weeks delivery. Is there anyone who has rebuilt ones or rebuilds these with a good track record?

Thx, Andy

Forget Germany...unless you're already there.

I've never had to replace one on an Audi or VW, but:

The going price here, for OEM (ZF) "new" is under $1500...or way less from a variety of re-builders (most owners go this route).

Knowing part numbers is everything when doing a part search.

4D1422052G was the original factory number. The available number is now 4D1422052GX..."X" means Audi factory rebuild...good as new.

A couple of suppliers of "OEM new" >>

Audi Parts - genuinevwaudiparts.com

Audi Steering Rack Complete Unit (A8 Quattro S8) - ZF 4D1422052GX | FCP Euro

Googling the part number (with X) will yield a bunch of online sellers and rebuilders...around $400 and up. A recent thread on QW forum would lead me to steer clear of "Rack Doctor" (not as fun as it sounds).

Cheers

Jorgen in Ann Arbor has had a good reputation among Audi enthusiasts. Steering gears and steering gearboxes, rack and pinion steering gears and more.

Hey Audi S8 Rules,
I pulled the rack out of mine and had the seals replaced for $50.00 (fifty) dollars. Ordering the seals and installing them myself wasn't an option, cuz the supplier wouldn't sell them to me. There is a post that I followed, documenting the entire rack removal process. IMHO the R&R of the rack isn't that difficult if you're interested in tackling it for yourself. The place that replaced the seals in mine is called XCEL near Albany, New York.

Let me know of you want their number.
