Fixed. VCDS doesn't identify which sensor is which correctly (G40) (G163)
Turns out it was actually the bank 1 sensor (G163) that was faulty, despite what VCDS was telling me.
So when it comes to cam position sensor faults, don't trust what VCDS tells you with regards to which actual sensor it is.
For reference, part number is 058905161B and below is what they look like. Bank 1 sensor (G163) is on the front of the bank 1 head behind the timing belt cover. Bank 2 sensor (G40) is at the back of the bank 2 head. Just 2 T30 torx bolts hold them in place.
