Default What essential tools do I need for a D3.??

Having just got the D3, will my old software and connection cable work ( for the D2) or do I need new software and connection cable etc?

Advice on what would be sensible from experienced owners would be great thanks!

Does Paul W still haunt these pages?

Thanks

You need HEX-CAN cable and VCDS, the later the version the better (like a version that is later than the model of car)

Thanks. Where is best to get these from?

I see you are also in Nottingham, it's a small world. Who do you use for service? I used Auto Teknic for my S8's

Thanks again

Why don't you try your cable and software? If it is Ross-Tech you may need updated software which is free. If not, new one is $350 and it is very well spent money. It is also good to have Bentley Repair Manual.

I have taken your advice and (to my surprise) the old VAG COM software has updated, now I need to see if the connector in the car has changed since a 2002 model?

I assumed that everything had changed, but maybe I was being a pessimist?

Will try it out tomorrow.

Thanks for the input

If you need to upgrade to a newer interface, I believe Ross-Tech will allow you trade in an old genuine cable for partial credit.

Default The connector itself has never changed--

it is the standardized OBD II connector. What you need is the newer CAN type cable for the D3; it just depends on whether you already bought it previously or not. It is marked on the label on the side of Ross-Tech's cable.

Default Paul W. is...

here once in a while IIRC, but resides mostly on Quattroworld. He purchased a D3 S8 last year or so; largest poster on QW in 2012 as a result.
