My Oil Usage - 96 A6 Avant 140K miles
Mobil 1 0W-40 / Mann 930/21 filter
This change: 139,382 miles
Last change: 130,950
-------
8,432 miles total
Started with 5 quarts in the pan
Added 2.5 quarts during change period
Drained 5 quarts when changed
Usage: 8,432 / 2.5 = 3,372 miles per quart
Some might be concerned about the mileage between changes. However, oil added along the way actually refreshes the oil. If you calculate the miles on the oil in the pan and assume zero miles on the 1/2 quart added, the effective miles on the oil at the change is 6,336 miles.
I've noticed that filling the pan to a 1/2 quart low on the dipstick results in lower usage than keeping it full. Just have to keep a closer eye on the level and not let it get below the low oil mark on the dipstick.

Sounds like mine...
2.5 quarts low last night when I bought it and it had about 7-8k on that oil.
Found an inspection report dated 1998 in the car's service history file. Sure enough, it says, "oil level low." So even at 2.5 years old it was using oil.
I guess that's the nature of the low tension piston ring design.

If you want to reduce oil usage, stay away from M1 0w-40.
This oil is not that good for our engines. I have heard many back this up. I used it for a short while and was not impressed. The engine burned more oil, the lifters were louder and the engine didn't seem to like it. If you must run M1(longer duration between oil changes, I know), go with the M1 truck and SUV oil mobil makes. Many on the 80/90 forum and 12v forum swear by it. The formula has changed from 5w-40 to 10w-40 so it is not quite the same. If you ask me, a nice dino oil like Mobil 10w-40 is great for the 12v in the summer. My consumtion is way down after running this. Good to see you are running the Mann filter.

It's also worth checking any breather network.......
because a partially blocked breather system can can cause, or at very least exacerbate oil consumption.
A 10w 40 helps reduce oil use through wear, but often it's the valve guide seals rather than mechanical wear.
My TDI uses a little between 5k mile changes if I use a fully synthetic 5w 40 but virtually none if I use a semi synthetic 10w 40
