Ratta-Tat-Cat
Hey All-
My car looks beatiful, but has started to sound like a popcorn cart in the past week. The sound is coming from the left underside of the car, so I assume I'm in for a new Cat. Any ideas out there on how to get one that doesn't cost $1,000? Also, do I (should I) need to replace both left and right cats if only one makes noise and is there anything else I should do at the same time (O2 sensors...).
Thanks,
Dave

Same car...same problems.
These are the things I've found in the past few weeks of dealing with the same problem.
1. Fix the problem as quickly as possible. I delayed and a piece of the cat is caught in the rear muffler. I have to replace it as well.
2. Cats go bad when the engine is not burning fuel efficiently which makes the cat work overtime in cleaning up your exaust.
3. Because of #2 you should replace the Plugs, Wires and 02 sensors.
4. Replacing both cats is not necessary if they are not both bad.
5. I had a really bad experience with discount converters. http://www.autobahn-performance.com seemed to have the best solution for me. $500 for a good replacement.
6. I got rid of the problem by paying a local shop $80 to cut my cats both out. The car is a good bit more noisy and more power, but not quite as legal.
Good luck.. hope my experience helps.

Magnaflow....
I would replace the original cats with a high flow Cat from your local muffler shop.
Magnaflow makes a set so does cnlperformance.com
Performance cats will cost about $200 a piece, the downside is that they have to cut the original cats off and reuse your down pipe.
Upside is that you'll get better flow and thus better performance.
This is the solution I am considering.
Sam.

I agree
I would get aftermarket cat(s) rather than pay 2k to replace with OEMs.
Make sure that they use stainless steel and not some cheap material to weld the new cats on. Its worth the extra cost to make sure they don't rust out in the near future. This is a big risk to all of us where excess salt is used on roads durring the winter.
I think that Ann Arbor (my home town) uses the most salt on the roads out of anywhere in the US. I remember reading that somewhere... so I try and stay alert.

Re: Check with your local Audi dealer, to see if it is covered by free replacement recall, drivers s
It never hurts to try, but has anyone else been successful getting warranty coverage from AOA with over 100K on the car?
