Default OBD I to OBD II occured between 1995 and 1996, at least on the sedans.

here's a fun thread (below) about differences on the early models...not EXACTLY what you asked about.

Headrests changed slighlty from 1995 to 1996.

My 1997 sedan has a "sidewinder" key. Assuming the 1997 and 1998 Avants did too. They can be converted to a switchblade flip key.

https://forums.audiworld.com/a6100/msgs/81333.phtml</a

So '96-'98 would all be the same?

Changes were minor in comparison.

Default All 1996 and newer vehicles are OBD II compliant, as required by Federal regs. In late '96,....

the secondary air injection system was added to the A6 2.8L V6 AFC engine (MMS 411/). At the same time, the valve covers wer changed from the "silver" alumninum to the "black" composite valve covers. The coolant was alos change in Oct '96 from the old blue/green coolant to the newer red coolant, which is the standard in all VAG cars since that time. Additionally, the motor management system (MMS) was upgraded approximately each year (MMS 300 < MMS 400 < MMS 411).

The other differencs were the alloy wheel styles that changed with each year (as Audi does now). Other than the noted changes by 4Driver4, there isn't realy much difference in the C4 Avant for these model years.

Anyone have pics of the different wheel year changes? What were the differences in MMS?

Default Whatever changes came about from '96-'98 were very slight. I've heard...

the head gasket issues were solved in '97, glad I got that year.

Don't forget 1-touch down for all windows and 1-touch up for fronts...
