Default Not 2 compressors. Secondary Air pump is a big blower motor, like a hair blow drier

It comes on immediately on cold start, and runs for a few minutes. It will sometimes come on again during initial warm up. Then it stays off until the next cold start.

Default I think the computer looks for it to turn on, and it looks for it to make pressure.

Follow the black plastic hose up into the engine and make sure it's not cracked or broken. Then, during cold start listen for the blower to turn on and run for a couple minutes. It's loud.

Default The Seconadry Air Injection system was introduced in late '96 AFC engine...

(MMS 411). It supplys excess air into the exhaust headers for ~100 seconds on cold start to burn any unburned gasoline that exits the engine. The secondary air pump then shuts off. The pump will also run for a much shorter time during a warm/hot start so the ECM knows it is still operational w/o any error.

My '96 A6 AFC engine doesn't have this system since it was an early AFC engine with MMS 400 (I also have the aluminum valve covers).

Nope, all late '96 A6s and newer VAG vehicles have this system.

But do you have the diverter valves & secondary air pump (mounted below air filter box)?
