Default Folks with broken 84 speedometer cables...

Has anyone tried using parts from the 4000's distant cousin, the Quantum? The single piece cable for those cars are still available. For reference the single piece cable for early 4ks is P/N 811 957 801 E.

http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=321957803AF</a

Default 84 folks have the 2 piece line, not a 1 piece...

It would be interesting to see if it has the correct threading to attach to the speedo on the back of the cluster... then you got yerself a good one

Default This conversion worked on my old '83 VW GTI . .

I was able to remove the count box and replace with a single-piece cable. Check the threads for sure, but possible!

Default I know...

Audi did make a single cable for the cars as well (for Canada models with no OXS box), the P/N is listed above, but I believe its NLA along with the two piece ones. The Quantum cable is still available and if it fits, would be a cheap replacement for those with broken cables on pre-85 models. If anything, the cable is likely a generic VDO application, its just a matter of finding another European car with the same cable fittings and length..... like a BMW or Benz.... cause they support their older cars.

Two piece P/Ns are 321 957 809 (trans to OXS box) and 811 957 801 B (OXS box to cluster).

Default You can use the 1 piece, just bypass the stupid OXS box!

In fact remove it, all it does is switch on the OXS light every 50,000 miles or so....
I did this and haven't had any problems since!

Default The transmission end of the cable is the same...

...however, how it attaches to the speedo is different between the quantum and the 4k. The 4k is threaded on the '84s and twist-lock on the 85-87s. On the Quantum, it's a push-lock type of arrangment.
