i've replaced the two big hoses off the radiator but would like to replace the little one that goes to the expansion tank. anyone know an I.D. and O.D. for the thing? the length? i assume if i but regulat heater hose i can replace with that.

When I got my car, the hose from the expansion tank to the radiator was very stiff and not flexible. I then discovered other 4K's in junkyards with a more flexible hose, the outside has a "cloth" feeling. If you can get ahold of one of these, I believe they are original equipment (somebody correct me if im wrong). My rubber stiff hose didnt do a good job, and I have had no trouble with the more flexible one!

Sorry, you're right, there are two smaller hoses, the tiny one up top and the lower one going to the bottom of the rad. the top one i have is woven cloth covered and i think that one is ok, just getting concerned with the age of the lower one.

Well, according to the parts fiche it is a formed hose. While you may be able to just use some heater hose, my thinking is that it may have too sharp a bend in it somewhere and heater hose will kink shut. OE part number is 034-121-055A for 85 and newer CGT, you may want to check cost on it first.

I replaced mine in '99 and I don't think I spent more than 20-30 us$.

In '99 I replaced almost the entire cooling system (heater core, all the hoses, clips that hold the hoses, heater valve, fan switch, shrouding, and thermostat). I had the radiator recored since it had metal tanks (it was recored with more tubes, making it cool better $165). I am not going to say that it was all inexpensive, I probably spent around $350 total. I can tell you that the special hose from the radiator to expansion tank (10mm or so in diameter) did not cost me $70+ US.

If you can't get the hose for a reasonable $$ let me know, via email, and I will see what I can do.
I might have ordered thru the local parts store or thru my friend.

When I did the job, I had trouble getting the lower clip that held the hose from rubbing on the sub-frame. Something about they had to order it right from Germany, took 6 months to get the correct part ????? I have an extra one now, I just don't know what the part number is off hand. I had to order from Audi and my local dealer sucks!!!

Oh, BTW, I have an '86 4kQ, if that makes a difference? It did on that stupid $1.?? clip!

There's only one audi dealer in town so the proctology exam happens on every purchase. I still have the clip holding the hose in the bend area but it seems to have lots of room so i was thinking of just buying a hose with the same inside diameter and running it up by making a large radius turn, pretty sure it would work but just need to know the inside diameter so i don't have to take the old one off and measure and spill all my coolant twice.

Just use regular hose for that one. Sure, you could try and find the shielded version from the dealer, but I just used a quality water hose and it works fine. I reckon you could try fuel injection hose as it is more durable...
