200 timing belt issues
after getting the front stripped off of my project 200 i discovered that what appeared to be merely a dented timing cover was actually a larger problem. behind the cover I found a cracked cam gearand that the engine had significantly jumped time and had stripped a section of teeth off of the belt. After hearing recently of people bending valves on the turbo engines i figured i was doomed, or atleast going to have to do a valve job. Of course not wanting to do such work on a car i bought to fix the body on i went ahead and threw a belt and cam gear on it so i could find out for sure. And to make a long story short after sitting for a year and a half it now runs (and hits on all five cylinders!)
So, either the engine is not quite the interference fit it has been rumored to be, or i am extremely lucky. If it is indeed that i should be so lucky i will bask in this moment of bliss provided for me by four ring god.

Re: 200 timing belt issues
There's no way that its a fully interferrence engine. One look at the pistons and how small the lift and duration values are will tell you that. Clearance volume in an MC is huge...
If any would be, it'd be the NF/NG, 10:1 CR with a very similar cam profile. My NF lost teeth and cracked the pulley in the accident. New belt and pulley, and she runs ;-)

didn't bother to take a picture
too much effort for a prank in my opinion. by the way i can really hear the turbo spool with my altered intake set-up, kind of unusual for an audi to hear it, i guess it really echoes in the pipe.

not something i would recommend
seeing my intercooler was damaged (severly) in the accident i replaced it with a straight peice of 2" nominal pipe (ABS plastic) and a "street" elbow to make the turn. I plan to bump the boost up slightly, though nothing radical (1.6-1.7 bar) as it is a slushbox. I figure with the auto box's nearly 2500 stall speed and no intercooler there should be very little lag and the slight loss of efficiency without the cooler will be hardly noticeable with my set-up and driving style. (I've mellowed over the years). I recently did some measurement of the air temp before and after the intercooler on a car in our shop and found that it was only about a twenty degree drop or so. I replaced the air intake temp sensor with a fixed resistor indicating approximately 125 degrees F to avoid engine knock. I won't have the benefit of capitalizing on cool air temps with advanced timing, but half of the year up here it would wasted on the snow and ice. It will still be faster than stock (any more and i'd be looking at tranny troubles....)
