Does anyone know when the Type44 first began to receive adequate rust-protection?

total zinking was avaialble only one series two typ44 models..
I am not quite sure how it was done on series one (series one= audi 5000 1982-1988)
(series two= audi 100/200/v8 1989 - up)
but the sereis two was complete zink bath.
At least the factory pictures I have seen show them being dipped in the zink bath.

In MY85, Audi literature describes their rustproofing as
a "multi-step factory rust protection" and included a 6 year rust through limited warranty.
Beginning in 86, Audi added a 2 sided galvanizing process to the multi-step (maybe the 85's were one side only?) and carried the same 6 year rust through warranty.
Not sure when things changed but the window sticker from my 99.5 A4 just says fully galvanized sheetmetal and carries a 12 year rust through limited warranty.
Interesting, my 85 5KS Avant has not one spot of rust.

I'll have to dig up my parents pictures from their trip to Ingolstadt back in the day. Shows the 944's and 5k's (er, 100/200's) on the same line, as well as one shell labeled with what step is what.

This is a long shot, but where'd you get your '85 wagon, Tom?
The reason I ask is that, if I recall correctly, you live in the NYC area - and I once sold a solid, rust-free and never wrecked charcoal 5000S avant with a standard to a Stamford, CT junkyward for $100, I'm reasonably sure they wouldn;t have parted it out (this is indeed a long shot, as we both know how many of those cars are on the road in that area - but something made me inquire)
