mysterious hole and fill plug suggestions
trying to put in some royal purple sythetic 75w-90 into my 91 5 speed v8. unfortantly im having a problem getting the fill plug out. im assuming the fill plug is by the axel and is not a mysterious hole in the transmission by the down pipe of the exhaust on the transmission closer to the engine chilling right by this hole is a o2 sensor wire. if this hole isn't the fill hole which im hoping it is cause i CANT GET THE FRIGGING FILL PLUG CAP OFF...what do you think it is....and for the love of God any suggestions on getting the 17mm allen bolt out of the side by the axel without stripping it? i came real close to stripping it where the allen wrench starts to move but the bolts not and then stopped before GOING FOR THE GOLD! seems like it could be rusted in for good. im about to take my air hammer to the car! i can even stick my finger in this hole and feel around a little in my transmission! WIGGLEY!!! im about to put a matress under the car so i can take a nap once i go into my unhappy place then wake up and start working on it again!

thats it
okay so ive learned a technique form a friend on how to get out stripped/ stubborn bolts but it kinda requires ruining the bolt. you grind a slit into the bolt and use an air hammer to tap it out. however i cant find a new fill plug on any parts sites. if anyone knows where i could get a new fill plug for a tranny that would be nice.

a new one is cheap enough thanks unless you want to send me your used one for free :P lets hope i can tap it out without taking the transmission or the exhaust out its a pretty tight squeeze. and yes it is 17 mm.

The old 17mm plug has been discontinued--there is a new plug:

For some reason, maybe due to all the gear oil thieves out there crawling under cars and draining fluid LOL, VAG decided to replace the venerable 17mm allen plug with a multi-point security plug..I tried for a while to get the old style plugs, to no avail...The dealer has the new plugs, but guess what? you will now need to order a new tool to install/remove them-a 14mm triple-square security socket, which has a hole in the center to fit over the nipple in the center of the new style plugs!
I normally apply heat to those stubborn plugs to get them out, but occasionally i have had to air chisel them..

Tool
