Default Bad heatercore?

Are the heatercores on these models as prone to failures as the ones on the VWs of the same era? At times I can smell coolant in the passenger cabin and this morning I noticed the floormat on the driver's side was wet & it sure seemed like it was coolant. Are they as big of a pain to replace as the VWs? At least it doesn't seem to have totally given out, is it possible that it's just going to keep leaking? Anything I can do as a "Band-aid" fix?

edit: I should add that I still get good heat coming out and sometimes the coolant light will flash when I'm turning or going up or down a hill, but the coolant gauge still reads a normal temp.

Default Are they covered under a recall?

A few years back I was able to get VWoA to pay to have the heatercore done on my '90 Corrado, it sure would be nice if Audi would do the same. This is just my Winter beater so I don't want to stick a lot of money into it, I'm guessing having a shop do it for me would get quite pricey.

Default shop will charge shop rate... and take their time...

Stealership quoted me 9-14h in labour to do a heater core, cause it requires 2 tech's to remove/install the dash.

First one I did took me 6.5 hours on my own... removed and installed on my own. This was 2 years ago, first major repair to my original black 90q.

Did one 2 weeks ago in the rally car (no glove box or shelf under steering wheel, no radio)... under 3 hours, including time spent messing around rerouting wiring i've added for rally lights/computer. Much of the time was spent with the heater box, cause the bracket that bolts to the firewall frigged up... captive bolt spun free, had to reach up behind heater box with tiny 10m socket while dad undid the nut in the engine bay.

Under the "Resources" menu at the top of the screen, search under "Interior".
