Why must my life be so difficult? (kinda long)
I went to circuit city today with the naive assumption that I would be leaving with new speakers. I'm not looking for a prize winning sound system but I'm pretty sure one of my rear speakers is blown out so I bought 2 5 1/4" infinity speakers and started waiting for them to be installed. Four hours later the rocket scientists they have working on my car tell me that because the factory speakers have a built in amp the new speakers don't work, and the only option is to buy new front speakers as well so the guy can run new wires to everything. Could someone who knows about the speaker setup please explain it to me because this doesn't sound right.

kick that guy in the *****... tell him i sent you.
there are two ways to put new speakers into the rear*.
*if you still have the stock head, you'd have to find a new OEM amped speaker. that's about all you can do, as you have to have an amp to push the speakers, and the rears are not amped from the OEM head.
if you have an aftermarket stereo:
1. you can use the existing wires that go from head to amp, find two wire colors that are on the back of the head, and on the amps, hook those wires to rear speaker outputs on the head, and to the inputs on the new speakers.
2. run new speaker wires under the door sills to the new rear spekers.
if you have an OEM head, aftermarket rears won't work without some serious modification, and that would be out of the circuit city guy's ability. but i don't know what the hell he was talking about when he told you you would have to get new fronts. that doesn't make any sense

In my 95 90 there were 5 wires..
I think the colours for positive negative were green and brown.. there are two white "power" lines, and one other wire that escapes me.. I have the harness sitting on my garage floor.. Just replaced all the wiring..
Its not impossible to install rear speakers into the car with the stock wiring, its just a bit of a pain.. You also may need a new wiring harness for the head unit.. I cant remember if I had to buy one or not, but the wires have to go into the speaker level outs instead of the line level outs..

ok, I do have an aftermarket stereo and knew it was possible but I was afraid if I had to talk to those asses for another minute I was going to lose it. I appreciate the info and after I cool down I may go back and bring up your suggestion. Thanks again
